HAPPY Brain Study

The HAPPY Brain Study is a collaborative effort by researchers in Psychological and Brain Sciences, Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Neonatology. The goal of the study is to identify factors that contribute to mental and physical health during pregnancy, the postpartum period, and among youth. The study involves completing online questionnaires, phone interviews, and an optional non-invasive brain scan in the laboratory. This study is further strengthened by unique resources in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Iowa including the Intergenerational Health Knowledgebase and the Perinatal Family Tissue Bank (PFTB).

Postpartum, and among

Youth

What is this study about?

The HAPPY Brain Study is examining changes in the brain over time– specifically how the brain is influenced by health and adversity during pregnancy, postpartum, and among youth. We hope this study will uncover the trajectory of mood and anxiety symptoms across pregnancy and postpartum. We will examine the relation between psychiatric symptoms and vascular risk during pregnancy and postpartum. We will determine the relations between parental psychiatric symptoms, vascular risk, and child outcomes.

How will my participation contribute to the study?

Participation in the study will contribute to knowledge regarding brain changes during pregnancy and postpartum.
